nynke boelens: all the things I keep inside

nynke boelens: all the things I keep inside

the cupboard filled with just the 'right amount' of object

there are some particular items which we have to keep, without any explanation as to why.
'all the things I keep inside', is a cupboard designed by nynke boelens which addresses this issue
of over-collecting and keeping too much. the piece consists of 480 parts which are all inter-connected
with elastic cord, making it flexible. the cupboard grows according to the amount of objects
you put inside it, therefore no longer defining the exact number of things you can keep.
the piece is on show now at the strijp-s in eindhoven, as part of dutch design week.

NEW Artlantis V3 coming out

New features !

Artlantis is recognized as the fastest, most powerful solution for photo-realistic 3D rendering and animation. Now, Artlantis 3 is strengthening its lead with an even more accurate radiosity engine, new management of geometry by layers, better management and enrichment of media, and simplified control of optimized lighting.

Editable Anchor Points
The anchor point allows you to place and rotate an object or component in the 3D scene. Grab this point in the 2D view by pressing the “D” key, and simply drag it to the desired location.

Media Search Function
When opening a file, Artlantis 3 allows you to search for and replace any missing media components on your hard drive, as well as delete them.

Media

The richness of the online Artlantis gallery eloquently demonstrates that media play a key role in projects and…in Artlantis 3 with new developments, new shaders…

Transparency of Billboards and Plants
Accessible directly in Artlantis, the new transparency slider allows you to set the transparency of billboards and 3D plants in order to better view the project. There’s no longer any need for photo editing!

Detachable Components
Detach elements of the 3D model and keep them as internal components in your 3D scene using the polygon selection tool. This component is easy to handle as an external object (aof) while remaining fully integrated in the scene.

Layers

The continuous development of media (currently several thousand) has focused our interest on their management, and on the handling of geometry in 3D scenes.

Layer Management
Artlantis 3 has a new structure of layers: scene, objects, 3D plants, lamps, animated objects and billboards. You can also add or remove your own layers.

Automatic Placement
The “default layer” function allows you to determine the destination layer for each type of media. Once you add new billboards or objects to your projects, you can have this placement done either automatically or manually.

Layer Import
ArchiCAD users will appreciate this new feature, which, thanks to the ArchiCAD export plug-in, allows you to select the layers you want to export to Artlantis.

Visibility by View
For greater ease of use and increased productivity, especially on large projects, hide the layers that might burden your work in preview (for example, 3D plants). What’s more, this new function also allows you to present your various layout options from the same document.

Lights

Fall-off Presets
Artlantis 3 offers 9 different types of lighting accessible by a drop-down menu (Lights inspector). Based on an adaptation of photometric data of light sources, these lighting options can be completely customized: change the intensity, the color, the angle, the softness of shadows…

Neon Shader
The Neon shader has also been greatly improved both in terms of quality and rendering speed.

Radiosity

This brand new rendering engine, developed especially for architecture, is faster and more accurate than ever before. No other product on the market matches Artlantis 3’s radiosity engine in rendering speed and precision.

Exceptional Quality
In general, the quality of the renderings has been greatly improved. Abvent’s R&D team has paid special attention to the likeness between the preview and the final rendering.

Complete Settings
Pre-defined settings for both interior and exterior scenes make life easier for beginners, while more advanced users will appreciate the “Expert” interface, which allows them to personalize the radiosity settings.

Animation

(Artlantis Studio)

Clouds
In an ongoing quest for realism, Artlantis Studio invites you to animate clouds by activating the wind’s parameters, the direction and speed of which you can choose in the heliodon inspector.

Water
A plain cursor is all you need to add movement to the Water shader, adding life to your 3D scenes with animated rivers, lakes, pools, seas…

Communication

In addition to its many import plug-ins, which are now compatible with the Autodesk 2010 product line, Artlantis 3 now benefits from a new technology for export plug-ins. This new feature, which is available in the OBJ, FBX, U3D, DWF, and SKP formats, integrates Artlantis into the complete design process.

Along with the release of Artlantis 3, four new DVDs will also be released featuring Mediterranean plant billboards from VB Visual, further enriching the collection of optional media.

Floating Green | 坐享悬绿

Floating Green | 坐享悬绿

Paradoxical Green
(this article will be published in <306090 Books> Sustain and Develop)
.
The lawn represents social commonwealth, an urban substitute for the productive soil of the rural environment. An ambiguous surface, infill for urban designer’s master plans, palliative for the scourge of urban development. Green looks great filling the spaces between buildings on all those drawings, but once those lawns are seeded do we all have to “Keep Off!” Lawns are benign, hygienic, and controlled; they cover all the horror, squalor and uncertainty of the ground. Lawns are a tactic on the battlefield between power and democracy—occupying and sometimes, also inhabitable!
.
Lawns are a visual representation of nature in an urban context; but they are anything but natural. is the lawn is an engineered product genetically enhanced, mass produced in rolls, cut into uniform strips, transported in a truck, and installed on site by hard human labor.
.
Lawns are little like urbanism in China; they consume little material, and cover large areas in a short time.
.
Floating Green, a public art installation located in Shanghai Pudong Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, detaches the flat lawn from the earth it covers, folds it and structures it to form inhabitable urban furniture. Instead of “Keep Off!” we are encouraged to “Hop On!” and touch it, smell it, use it and sense it however we please. The thin structure shakes gently when people sitting on it burst into laughter. An architectural artifact is usually singular and monumental, while a city emphasizes density and multiplicity. Floating Green rejects sculptural iconography in favor of an urban surface articulated in diverse parts.
.

Digital Wallpaper

To decorate the office space of Büro Hirzberger in Vienna Strukt realised a digital wallpaper that illuminates the walls. In this self-initated project Strukt was given complete creative freedom by the client, and developed a system to project video and realtime content undistorted onto any surface.

The basic idea was to light up the black and white striped office wall by mapping the architecture with multitple projectors. The program developed by Strukt is scripted in vvvv and is scaleable to any number of projectors and any architectural shape. Several different visualisations have been realised already, amongst it a Pac Man animation as well as moving stripes, and more are in development. The content could also be made interactive, reacting to people passing the ground-floor offices.

the bergmoench backpack bike

the bergmoench is an unusual bike design by koga which can be folded into a backpack. the bike is
designed to be compact and lightweight for climbing hills and mountains. the vehicle can be unfolded
into a bike at the top and ridden down the hill. the bike doesn't have pedals, relying on the slope of
the hill to propel the rider. it also doesn't have a seat, but does have foot rests and brakes. the idea is
users will climb a hill and roll down on the bike in a more upright position. the attached backpack
even has space for other things like a helmet  and food.

of bold colours, pop-style contours and a curved form factor.

quick launch buttons on the front of the handset offer fast access to key features including
the music player, camera and messaging application. a 3.5mm earphone jack allows its
owners to use their own earphones and, like the original samsung corby, corby(TXT),
it comes with brightly-coloured fashion jackets, changeable battery covers - a simple black
one and the second with detailed graphic designs.

‘luminaire bergere chair’ by lee broom

‘the revivalists’ is an exhibition at CAA in london curated by british design commenter max fraser.
the show features a stable of emerging designers and craftspeople all hailing from london.
‘the revivalists’ explores the definitions of craft and design in contemporary culture, showcasing
where these fields merge and migrate. the designers on show all represent a growing number of
creative people rebelling against the newness of mass production, choosing a more traditional mode
of creation. one of the exhibit’s highlights includes the illuminated seating collection by lee broom,
which transforms old chairs into sculptural works using lighting. other designer on show include
tom dixon, simon hasan and kathleen hills among others.

studioquint: nextdoor - temporary interior design

studioquint: nextdoor - temporary interior design

nextdoor inside the centre of amsterdam school of entrepreneurship
all photos by mark weemen

nextdoor is a temporary interior design for the center of amsterdam school of entrepreneurship
(CASE) by studioquint. the proposed brief for the space was to develop 10 permanent work-units
and 40 flexible work areas for the 275 m2 office space. because of the tight budget,
all the furniture and work-units have been assembled by low cost standard door elements.

the starting point of the intervention was based on specific programmatic conditions.
individual students had to develop his own business identity and at the same time all of them
had to orient in complex economical network. all of the work units are white cubes,
differentiated by various interior elements made from back plywood which offer additional
storage spaces and to stabilize the units. by linearly placing the working objects,
a kaleidoscopic effect is created.
