'furniture factory' is a collection by dutch designer lucas maassen and his three sons. maassen employed his sons
julian and maris, both age 7, and thijme, age 9, to paint the pine wood furniture built in the factory. as noted in a contract
the boys signed with their father, each son receives a stipend of 1 euro for every piece of hand-built furniture they paint
and may only work three hours per week, as allowed by dutch child labor laws. due to the condensed time frame
in which the brothers and father are able to create, the speed of production is a highly influential factor in the aesthetics
    of each LM+S piece.

the 'capa' desk is created by reinhard dienes for the foundry collection, crafting a work which speaks to the design ideals
of both creative entities. the sleek desk unit is called 'capa' due to the positioning of varied color and texture adjacent
to one another in the piece, as the name means 'layers' in in spanish.

netherland-based chris idema + reinier simons have created 'twentyeleven: project kenya', a housing development which re-imagines

the current slums in nairobi, kenya, africa without enforcing a westernized ideal onto an existing culture. by working together with
the 236 inhabitants - including 52 families, 15 small companies and three workshops - a new building plan is being developed for
the people currently living in the slums of nairobi. the existing norms and values are integrated into an organized structure,
ensuring it is a flexible and adaptable design while giving them clean water, a controlled cooking environment and
    better living conditions in general.

overall, the new living conditions are meant to give the members of the community more time and engery to develop themselves,
their children and their environment in a place that is comfortable and familiar.

'basic office' by betillon / dorval-bory architectes
    image © simon deprez

parisian architecture firm betillon / dorval-bory set up their 'basic office' in a renovated shop space near luxembourg gardens, paris.
with only 25 square meters to work with, the architects decided to keep it simple. instead of breaking up the area into compartments,
an open space allows the light from the front window to flood to the back.

two strips of workspaces are divided by a central circulation aisle. this allows for the flexible arrangement of stations
as well as providing wall space above the desks where storage cabinets are mounted and illuminated from behind by fluorescent tubes.
the wall washing aims to give a sense of the natural light. for overhead lighting, three powerful pendants hang from the ceiling.

with concrete flooring and linear positioning of furniture, sound became an issue. pyramidal acoustic foam tile,
the same material used in recording studios, is dropped from the ceiling to absorb the reverberations. for further sound masking,
hanging loudspeakers broadcast music and white noise. the back wall of the office is a white-stained cork surface which becomes
a pin-up board for current projects and images.

spanish practice mario corea arquitectura has completed the 'hospital sant joan de reus' for the city of reus located in barcelona, spain.
a dominant tilted roof marks the main entrance for visitors approaching the complex. the angled form partially envelops a continuous atrium
bordered by a glass facade.  the rambling hallway generates an innovative program arrangement to maintain a low building profile which
conforms to the site's existing topography.

    hospital and garden

six double-story horizontal elements containing patient rooms project perpendicularly from long connecting space. hovering above administrative offices,
these narrow volumes provide an intimate setting for visitors with outward views overlooking intermittent green roofs below. twenty four light wells pierce
from the roof through to the ground level allowing ambient light to penetrate inner spaces. vegetated open air courtyards provide a perpetual connection
with nature amidst the surrounding urban environment.

    louvered facade

communal spaces are scattered along the atrium space as points of interest that engage a human sense scale. revealed and accessed through
the slanted curtain wall, these amoeba contoured forms compliment the facilities established linear scheme.

'lux craft', a new exhibition space for lighting design at london's origin contemporary craft fair in september, will feature the works of ten designers
above, 'sonumbra de vincy', a previous installation by london-based art and design studio loop.pH, that will exhibit a similar design at this year's lux craft event

the origin contemporary craft fair in london this september will feature lux craft, a new platform for lighting installations.
defining 'lux' as the measure of the light intensity as perceived by the human eye, the crafts council established this focused
exhibition in response to origin's new audience of architects and interior designers in town for the london design festival.

centrally located within the origin pavilion, the micro-show will showcase the works of ten selected designers:
ontwerpduo, sarah blood, johannes hermann, jos kranen of kranen/gille, rachel wingfield of loop.pH, richard wheater,
hsiao-chi tsai & kimiya yoshikawa, niamh barry,
     jeremy cole, and kirsti taivioli.

'lux craft' will be on display on old spitalfields market from september 22-28, 2011.

nathan wiernik and tienke beunders of eindhoven-based studio ontwerpduo will install a custom fixture composed with their
'light forest' system. with a pipe-like structure, the design consists of various connecting parts which can be adapted to different spaces.

storm pendant lights by johannes hermann, 'karl' (left) and 'emil' (right)

frankfurt-based designer johannes hermann will create a new series of pendant lights, titled 'nicolas'.
see designboom's previous coverage of his storm forms here.

'00:00.00', lux craft proposal by dutch designer jos kranen

dutch designer jos kranen of kranen/gille has proposed to create an installation titled '00:00.00' for lux craft.
the work features energy-saving bulbs which are cast in a fully-closed plaster spheres: these shells must be
cracked in order for the light to be accessed, making a destructive action necessary to start each lamp's new life.

'blooming propeller' by hsiao-chi tsai and kimiya yoshikawa

japanese designers hsiao-chi tsai and kimiya yoshikawa have proposed a site-specific lighting sculpture based on their recent work,
'blooming propeller'. developed for visual impact at every angle, the piece resembles an oversized flower. it is to be composed of
intricate organic shapes, made out of contrasting shiny florescent perspex and matte neoprene, with UV paints transforming its
    appearance from day to night.

'illusia', lux craft proposal by kirsti taiviola

finnish designer kirsti taiviola will display 'illusia': this pendant lamp features a fine, almost invisible texture on a handblown glass ball
hidden in the lampshade, which creates a blossom-shaped projection of reflections on surfaces below. with three different levels of light
intensity, the visibility of the reflection can be adjusted so the lamp can serve both decorative and illuminating functions.
